The main island, Mallorca, offers dramatic mountain scenery and spectacular touring through the Sierra Tramuntana. Follow the coast road to the south-west as it plunges down to the resort of Andratx, an exclusive hideout for celebrities. And the capital, Palma, rivals the great cities of the mainland with its cathedral, fine buildings and atmospheric Old Town.
In Menorca, away from the elegant, historic capital of Maò or Mahon, the interior is green and rural. Much of the coastline is unspoilt with undeveloped beached and secluded bathing.
Ibiza town offers high-octane nightlife, but much of the Old Town is untouched by this and it retains its character. The interior is spotted by whitewashed farmhouses where olives, figs and almonds are cultivated.

Local Cuisine
The food of the islands has much in common with that of the nearby mainland and is basically Catalan in character.
Grilled fish is always good, sometimes served with mayonnaise which Menorca claims to have invented.
"Tumbet" is a casseroled mixture of peppers, potato and tomato and "sobrassada" is a spicy black sausage from Mallorca. Mallorca is also known for the sweet pastries called "ensaimadas".
