Campania’s main city Naples, chaotic yet strangely attractive, sprawls along the coast of the Bay of Naples in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. By contrast the islands, of Ischia and Capri, located in the Bay, are refined and tranquil frequented by Italy’s well-to-do.

The coast stretching south from Naples has been a favourite destination for holiday makers for many years including the pretty coastal towns of Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi and Massa Lubrense. Sandy beaches are further south.

The best preserved Roman remains anywhere in Italy are at Pompeii and Herculanum.
